I finally got out of the office! SIM has a project of a Christian school in one of the slum areas of Nairobi, Kariobangi. This area has a high population of the Borana that Jeff is working with. The pupils had outgrown the school, so we started a project to build a new one when the Lord provided the 2 plots adjacent to the 4 rooms the school was renting. We went to the opening of the school. Right now, only the first floor is complete, but the 2nd and 3rd floor structures are in place. The ceremony was great and the kids performed skits, sang songs and presented us visitors and parents with a red rose. Then they fed us lunch. Quite a celebration.
Although the drive to the Ark school where we went was harrowing, Jeff drove like a “true Kenyan”. J At one point, we drove up the wrong lane of a divided road. Of course, we weren’t the only ones. Jeff just followed the pack! I closed my eyes and prayed, and we safely made it! Fortunately, we had a couple of Kenyans riding with us that helped us navigate out.
It was fun to be out and about. When we alighted at the school, we were greeted by a dozen tiny 2 to 4 year olds all shouting “Mzungu, Mzungu!” (Mzungu is what the Kenyans call us white people). Then they came running up to shake our hand.
