I DO NOT Like It, Sam I Am!

I do not like 220 volt power. I do not like the fact the plugs are different here. I do not like running at 50 hertz instead of 60 hertz, because my alarm clock wakes me up at 10:14 am instead of 6am. I do not like the fact that power converters, which are supposed to drop 220V to 110v, instead drop it to 160v or 180v. I do not like having to read the small print on every adapter to see what wattage it requires because I just might overload my power strip. I'm too old and my eyesight is too bad! I do not like blowing up my motherboard because a power surge happened at the exact moment I plugged it in. I do not like it that Dell doesn't do warranty work in Kenya, despite having a bazillion stores here. I do not like the fact that half of everything sold doesn't fit a standard Kenyan outlet, but instead uses some sort of two pronged European plug that doesn't work in a "grounded" Kenyan outlet unless you stick something into the ground socket to "unlock" the safety mechanism so you can plug the two-pronged thingy in without ground. Why doesn't Europe want grounded appliances anyway???? I do not like cheap Chinese multi-pronged adapters that don't plug securely into the wall, leaving exposed metal and in which those two-pronged European nightmare plugs fall out because for some bizarre reason, they put the two pronged part on the bottom of the adapter.

There. I feel better. Thanks for listening.

If anyone out there is coming to Kenya, DO NOT bring 110v appliances, curling irons and especially hair dryers!! Just buy the stuff here. It's more expensive, especially for a short trip, but less of a headache for sure.

And then the Lord said, "At least I gave you power so you could type all your grumblings into the computer and share them with people all over the world because of the technology I've given you as well." Sorry, God. Thanks for the power!

You're too funny. :) Just think, in a few months -- weeks, even -- this will all be old hat. Praying for you!

Hi Julie
I'm feeling your pain. Been there done that. We tell everyone we know going outside the 110 world to buy appliances in the 220 country. Of course that came after many tears of experience and my most prized possession (Kitchenaid mixer) bit the dust as I was making bread one day here in Peru.

We are still very blessed to be able to have power though, aren't we? I'm thankful for a laptop that doesn't have to be plugged in all the time and a great surge protector that I found here.

Hang in there, girl! You'll adapt before you know it! Hugs!!!

Julie, I sure feel your pain! My husband said yesterday as he walked through the kitchen, "Pray for your cousin, Julie Vigil." I have no idea why he said that! I have a reminder set on my computer to remind me to pray for you twice a week...maybe he had seen that and had been on my computer.

Even in America, it's frustrating. My computer wouldn't come on plugged into my port yesterday morning.

And, I have my Blackberry set to turn off at midnight. Forgetting that, not realizing the time, I pressed to go to the internet on a free application (dictionary.com). Well, that FRIED my phone!

Instead of spending quality time this afternoon (Sunday), I get to make a trip to Sprint. And, who knows what happens when I plug my laptop back into the port upstairs. I'm staying plugged downstairs in the kitchen for now!

Ok, I have vented, too. I am thinking of you!

Love

Thanks for all your prayers, friends! I know it's just a time of adjusting, and as you said, Cynthia, it can happen anywhere.

Julie, I have GOT to figure out how to "sign up" for your blog or whatever I have to do to get notified when you write on it. But I just read this today and remembered the agony of 220. TOTALLY agree, drop the 110 stuff and just get everything 220. Back in the old days you used to have to it all in Miami or LA I bet it's easier now! Paise God for that!
